When I first heard of wool nursing pads, I thought, “Yowch!” After all, who’d want to put something scratchy like wool on such a tender area? But I heard so many good things about them that I decided to give them a try, and I’m very glad I did!
The merino wool is incredibly soft (not a bit scratchy) and very absorbent. The pads are HUGE and look a bit intimidating when you first see them, but their size is supposed to help prevent plugged ducts by keeping the breasts warm. I find that the size is actually nice and keeps them from leaving little tell-tale circles that show through your shirt, like some smaller pads do.
But the biggest benefit to wool is the lanolin, which keeps you from having to wash the pads every time you wear them. (Of course, you WILL have to wash them — just not nearly as frequently as other reusable pads.) As one site explains it, “As the wool absorbs moisture, lanolin is converted to lanolin-soap, which has an antibacterial effect.” You’ll need to use a special wool-friendly soap and occasionally relanolize the pads (you can do this with Lansinoh or other lanolin products). That’s a bit of a pain, in my opinion, but definitely worth it to cut down on the washing.
If you’re a heavy leaker (like me), you’ll definitely want the Ekstra pads. The regular ones are nice, but I found that, at least at the beginning, they just weren’t thick enough for me.

I purchased two pairs of these nursing pads after using cotton nursing pads that I would have to triple up on to prevent leak-through. The Ekstra pads do an exceptional job at controlling heavy milk leakage discreetly. I like several features about them: 1. They are comfortable. Any irritation I was feeling from prior permanently damp pads was gone within a day of using these pads. 2. The larger size actually creates less show-through on clothing compared to standard sized non-disposable nursing pads. 3. They feel warm and dry, even when wet. 4. While I have had some leak-through, particularly at night when my baby goes longer between feedings, it is nowhere as bad as what I was experiencing double and triple padding prior cotton pads. Because the wool absorbs the liquid, I do not need to change the pad other than twice daily (per manufacturer instructions), even when I have leakage. 5. As the importer states, these pads do not smell, even after several consecutive uses without washing (again, per manufacturer instructions). 6. Washing and care is easy. While they are certainly more expensive than buying a box of disposables or even standard cotton pads, I am now a believer of the claim that these are the only nursing pads I will need for the entire time I will be nursing, which makes them the best deal in the long run!

These are hands down the greatest nursing pads ever. I highly recommend them, especially for larger breasted women (I’m a 34 G). They’ve never soaked through, and they have never chafed or irritated my skin, even when I had sore nipples (and I have very sensitive skin). At first I was worried that because they’re wool, hand washing would be a huge hassle, but they seem to only require washing every couple of weeks and it turned out to be very easy. I use Kookaburra soap, hang them up to dry, and they look good as new. They’re surprisingly cool in warmer weather, so wearing them during the summer is no problem. They cover almost the entire breast, which I thought was strange at first, but that is the proper fit. They’re very comfortable, and conform to the shape of my breasts so they lie nice and flat without showing through my bras. They’re not even visible even under t-shirts. A totally fantastic product!
